Be Safe on Fishing Trips

December 1, 2011 by admin

It is not uncommon when you hear someone has accidentally hooked himself on a fishing hook and sustained injuries. Instances are also not rare when anglers have had to face the chill and had to bear the cold in dearth of proper warm clothing. There is not one person who would dub fishing to be dangerous but nonetheless one needs to be safe while on fishing trips.

The weather to begin does not come with a warranty certificate that it is going to be the same all through the day. Ideally you should consult the weather before leaving for a trip and also the weather for the few following days, that way you will have an idea about what you are possibly up against. If the weather happens to change for the worse while you are already on a fishing trip, it is wise to start heading to safe covers. Carrying warm clothes for chilled weather and cool clothes for hot weather conditions is a smart move. Rain gear or rain wear will keep you from getting drenched.

The next thing to be kept in mind is not only carrying but actually wearing the Personal Floatation Devices (PFD) or life vests when you are on a fishing trip. Not only you but all the others on the boat should also be wearing life vests not to mention the kids on board. You should also be wearing life vests even when you are going wading.

If you see a sign that says “off limits”, it means the area is indeed off limits. It has been declared so to protect vegetation, wildlife, or your safety. Do not fish in the areas where it is prohibited. Also to ensure safety do not venture into unfamiliar waters.

You have handpicked some of the sharpest of the hooks and other fishing tackles. Be very careful while handling these things. Keep them safe in a tackle box and make sure that the children are not playing with them- they might get hurt. When you are getting the hook off from a fish, do not hold the fish close to the hook, if the fish wiggles the wrong way you would end up getting injured with that sharp hook.

Do not keep your tackles lying around. Someone might trip on it and get injured, step on the hook or even break your equipment. Always check behind before casting to avoid the hook from getting tangled on a power line, tree or a person. Keep a first aid box handy to attend to the cuts and scrapes. Band aids, antiseptic lotion, aspirins etc should be fine.

If you are going out fishing in the day, be adequately protected. You will need a good and effective sun block with high SPF (sun protection factor). Wear covered clothing and a big hat to minimize the sun burn. You can also wear a sunglass to protect your eyes from the glare.

Carry enough food and fluids especially water if you are out on a fishing trip. You never know how long it is going to take to hook that trophy fish and when you would be heading back home for dinner.

Flashlights, maps, cell phone or a radio may just feel like some extra stuff to be carrying while you are on a fishing trip but these few things are pretty essential things to come to rescue when in mess.

If fishing is your favorite pass time, let us make it even more delightful and pleasant by adhering to the few safety measures as mentioned above. Happy Fishing and Tight Lines!
